A 14-year-old boy from Bloomington was identified Monday by the Peoria County coroner as the person who was found dead Saturday morning in the Illinois River near Bartonville.

Coroner Jamie Harwood said in a Facebook post that Leron Griffin died due to drowning in the Illinois River and likely hadn’t been in the water more than two days. Griffin was found by a fisherman around 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the Peoria County side of the river near the Shade-Lohmann Bridge.

Harwood said that there was no evidence of perpetuated trauma or injury and that a toxicology report is pending. However, he did note that the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office had yet to determine just how Griffin made it into the river in the first place.

An investigation remains underway. Harwood said that his thoughts were with Griffin’s family in their time of mourning.
